IDEA: Hats for your drinking glasses
MOTIVATION: Have you ever poured a coke into a glass, enjoyed the carbony goodness of it all, only for it to go flat on you 10 minutes later?
METHOD: With hats on your drinking glasses, the carbonation has nowhere to escape to, keeping global CO2 emissions temporarily down so that you can absorb them directly into your gut and then fart them out later, essentially offsetting your carbon footprint with time.
WORK REQUIRED: The carbon entrapment device has been fully developed as rollable latex sock that can slide easily onto any glass. We still need to work out how to let the liquid pass through the latex and into people’s mouths without gagging. A hay or straw-like tube might be neccesary to puncture through the latex, but this tube may also require a hat
CAPITAL REQUIRED: $ 10 million in upfront costs for purchasing alcoholic and carbonated beverages, latex condiments, and the services of attractive women. $ 20 million for later costs from the resulting lawsuits.

Once dreamt a solution (the logic, not the code, though) for an actually real programming issue I had and the solution actually worked.
Ditto… ish.
In my dream I mixed up some constraints of the real-world system. I still came up with an elegant solution that would have worked if the dreams constraints were true. Except they weren’t and the solution was useless.
Bonus was the dream-solution exposed a “front door” so to speak on the real problem and I felt dumb that I even spent 5 minutes thinking about it.

Production error nightmares, PEN. Seriously, sometimes, after working on a problem for a long time, even if rigorous testing in multiple testing environments by different people was involved, these still happen.

Don’t ssy that. Afaik one now famous mathematician tried to come up with a number sequence that has no purpose at all. His name was fibonacci. He failed.
I once dreamed up a way to send cake through a fax machine. When I woke up, I remained convinced for about 5 minutes that the solution would work.
My solution was all in code, but yeah. Spend enough time with your head in a domain and the dreams get wierd.

This speaks to me. I always have some sort of vague dream about writing a program to do something that is just a physical problem, or like decides how other people think. Writing it down is very confusing because it very clearly made absolutely no sense. But in my dream I felt like a genius and wizard.

When I was a very junior EE I ended up working mostly on microcontroller code. There was one bit of extremely ugly code I inherited that parsed a terribly designed serial communication protocol by using a giant maze of nested if statements. I really wanted to rewrite it to something better, but I never quite came up a solution while I worked there. Years later after I was no longer at the company I had a stress dream about it and finally came up with a working solution. I still wish I could go fix it. I really hope it’s no longer used, or that someone else has finally fixed it.
