I don’t really understand the defense of the Russian Federation by contemporary communists. The Russian Federation is about as communist as the US is; if anything, it’s more fascist than the US is. Is it just a Tankie tradition to like Russia at this point?

Just like on other social media, a lot of them aren’t real people.
They are probably infiltrated by the borfarms too. They are as soft as a clay to form them in the needed way. I don’t know about Lemmy, but Reddit has a lot of communitites and users unironically inviting everyone to flee from woke democracies.
Russia is essentially an oil company with the added “benefit” of owning an army to protect their business interests.

It’s sad to say, but I’ll never recommend the fediverse to anyone, or even admit to using it, until those authoritarian propaganda instances are way less prominent.
I’ve blocked lemmygrad, hexbear and most communities in .ml, would block the whole instance, but there are a few ok communities that don’t have sufficiently active counterparts on less hostile servers.
