Rewatching it some years after release, I decided that 1. it hadn’t aged well and 2. it was trying too hard to be a prequel for the first of the video games (which I never played) and not hard enough to be a story in its own right. The music was kickass, though—one of Yuki Kajiura’s earlier soundtracks.
