That’s just a weak-ass cop-out and you and I know it.
Why even have plots if they have magic machines that can make any problem go away with arbitrary explanations of how they work that are neither consistent or logical within the rules of its universe?
It’s stupid. And I can bet you’re just going to respond “Well, I like it anyway so I don’t care” in which case why even bother responding?
Because Star Trek is about cultural and social problems, the tech is just a plot device. When the Warp Drive dies and they dish out some techno babble about why it is just a means to have them deal with whatever caused it.
Then there’s no point in it being science fiction. If you want to make a show about social issues, you write contemporary fiction because that is what it’s for. Doing otherwise causes situations like this where the message is wholly drowned out and ruined by the setting and lore – especially when a lot of the show’s messages are about critical thinking which is often applied when identifying and addressing plot holes in fiction.
Star Trek is just a terrible show. Patrick Stewart is a great actor but Star Trek as a franchise just sucks. The fact that other people like it doesn’t change that.
You do realize, that (original) Star Wars is the same? Or the Expanse? Or basically everything from Asimov? They all wrote about themes that weren’t sci-fi. Morals, philosophy, cultural and societal issues and ideas, wrapped in a sci-fi story. Maybe you should apply some of that critical thinking you were talking about and try to see past your limited horizon to learn what these stories actually want to tell you.
