Why are you such a derelict? Such a piece of human junk? The answer’s simple. You’re a scanner, which you don’t realize. And that has been the source of all your agony. But I will show you now that it can be a source of great power.

CW: Exploding head. David Cronenberg. Genetic manipulation. Homeless escalator acrobatics. Involuntary suicide. Thinly veiled Thalidomide allegory. Did I say exploding head? Exploding head.

A happy synchronicity - had no idea that had been posted, but off to upvote @MC_Lovecraft@lemm.ee.

Saw this as a kid with my mom in the theater. After being scarred by the “head” scene, I watched the rest of it between my fingers with my hands up covering my face. Such sweet memories of mother/son time in my youth.

Ah Cronenberg movies, great movies to watch with parents!

Joke aside, this is by far from the worst of his movies to watch with parents.

Good movie with the minor quibble that the main actor didn’t actually act. Micheal Ironside and Patrick McGoohan acted laps around Stephan Lack, and McGoohan was drunk off his face the entire time.

Also, the actor who played the dude with the exploding head, Louis Del Grande, starred in a Canadian show called Seeing Things. The premise was the guy solved mysteries with his psychic powers.

And another thing, the exploding head was done with super high tech special effects: a shotgun to the dummy’s gore filled head.
