I’m a pretty seasoned albeit a little rusty pirate who recently returned to pirating because I’m unwilling to keep indulging in the greed of Netflix. The problem is my partner isn’t and she’s really struggling with Kodi’s interface. And also many shows she enjoys watching are difficult to find on Kodi even though I’ve subscribed to Real Debrid. We’ve also looked at other streaming services but they’re all pretty limited thanks to all everything being exclusive these days.

Torrenting is out of question for her and setting up a Plex server is too much work for me.

I actually don’t mind paying, but the question is, what should I pay for? What has a decent UI and streams as well as major streaming services but comes with a lot more options?

Stremio (with Torrentio + Real Debrid) makes for pretty nice user interface. I actually went that route instead of Kodi specifically so it’s easier for my husband to use.

I agree with the above. Others have suggested Jellyfish which IS great software but it would require user acquisition and curation of content, something definitely simplified with the likes of Stremio.

Just did what you suggested and jeez… Stremio’s UI is way better than Kodi. Addons are so much easier to install too. Torrentia+RD definitely appears to have all bases covered too. Thank you so much for that.

Totally, I set up Stremio on an AndroidTV box for my family and they use it all the time, they don’t miss Netflix anymore. The quality of the movies/shows is great and it doesn’t stutter(90% of the times it doesn’t, for me at least… depends on the file)

But it uses torrents, so maybe that’s a problem for OP?

        they don’t miss Netflix anymore.

That’s the experience I’m trying to create for my partner. I’m very comfortable with torrenting but she wouldn’t have a clue on how to do it (safely). As long it streams and doesn’t require her to actually go through the torrent client it’ll be fine.

Thank you all for the suggestions. It’s really starting to feel at home here on Lemmy!

No problem m8 always a pleasure to help

As another user said you need to install the “torrentio” addon which gives you access to pretty much all the torrents, it has it’s own website. This can be done on Desktop or mobile(Android)

On TV you first have to configure Stremio on a phone or PC with a Stremio account(free) and then sync your addons on Stremio TV with the same account.

A bit tricky and confusing, but it is easy, you can find more compressible tutorials on YouTube

Have to get her to stop whinging about Kodi haha. Ditched the shitty Android box and setup my spare laptop as a dedicated streaming machine. It’s now much faster and smoother.

I might suggest you take a look at Jellyfin. similar to Kodi but I feel it has a polish that kodi lacks. I was in your position years ago, and I will always recommend either Plex or Jellyfin.

Plex isn’t worth recommending anymore. The interface tries to force you into streaming alternatives even if you have something downloaded locally. I finally ditched it for Jellyfin a few months back.
